What does sleeping-pad R-value mean?
R-value measures a camping mattress's resistance to heat flow. A higher value provides more insulation in the standardized comparison, but it does not translate into one guaranteed outdoor temperature.
The pad is the insulation underneath you.
A sleeping bag is compressed under body weight and cannot do the pad's job. Compare pads using values measured under the same recognized test method, then consider durability, dimensions, inflation, and the complete sleep system.
Compare two published R-values
Pad B has the higher published valueUse this as a relative insulation comparison, not a temperature rating.
What else to compare
- Test method: look for a value measured with ASTM F3340 or a clearly identified comparable method.
- Fit: shoulders, hips, and feet need to remain on the pad.
- Inflation: follow the manufacturer's instructions; leaks and incorrect inflation change performance.
- Failure plan: carry a repair kit for an inflatable pad or add a simple foam backup in colder conditions.
Avoid fake precision: there is no universal, standards-body table that converts one pad R-value into a guaranteed minimum camping temperature for every sleeper and sleep system.
